During the 1971 war between India and Pakistan, this airport was raided 35 times in 14 days with 22 rockets and 92 bombs. It was rebuilt by 300 women from the local village of Madhapar, while the war still raged on. After being damaged in the 2001 earthquake, the Bhuj Airport was renovated at a cost of INR 400 million and the completed airport was dedicated to Lal Krishna Advani who was then the Deputy Prime Minister of India.
